Curl Experience aftercare: what to do the first 72 hours
By Angie Curly Hair Stylist | July 6, 2026
Answer first: For the best results, avoid washing or heavy manipulation for the first 48 to 72 hours, sleep on a satin surface, stick to the products and styling steps your stylist gave you, and skip heat tools. That window is when your curl pattern and cast settle, so less fiddling usually means more definition and less frizz, especially with Edmonton’s weather swings.

Our Curl Experience is a 120-minute appointment that combines a pattern-enhancing haircut, a custom treatment, and a scalp massage, then we teach you how to style your curls with one-on-one instruction and a written Curly Hair Styling Guide.
Aftercare is what makes that appointment worth it. If you protect the cast and keep friction down for the first few days, your curls usually stay bouncier and more defined longer. And if something feels off, we want you to reach out. We’ve been working with curls in Edmonton for about two years, and most “my curls fell flat” moments come down to a couple fixable habits in the first 72 hours.
First 24 to 48 hours after Curl Experience: hands off, heat off
Right after your Curl Experience, your biggest job is simple: don’t break the cast. That means no washing, no aggressive detangling, and no constant fluffing. In a city like Edmonton, it’s also the time to be careful with hats, hoodies, and anything that rubs at your crown or hairline.
The quick do and don’t list (we keep it realistic)
- Do: let your curls fully dry before touching them. If you have to adjust, use light fingertip taps, not raking.
- Do: sleep on a satin pillowcase or wear a bonnet. Friction is the fastest way to turn definition into frizz.
- Do: pineapple your hair (high, loose pony) or do a loose bun if your curl length allows.
- Don’t: wash for 48 to 72 hours unless we told you otherwise in your guide.
- Don’t: use heat tools. If you must dry, diffuse on low heat and low airflow.
- Don’t: load up heavy oils right away. They can weigh down the cast before it’s set.
If you accidentally get a little water on your hair, don’t panic. Blot gently with a microfiber towel or soft cotton tee, then let it air dry. The key is avoiding scrubbing and brushing. If you’re unsure what “light touch” looks like for your curl type, use the steps in your Curly Hair Styling Guide exactly as we wrote them for you.
Days 3 to 7: keep definition, avoid the sneaky frizz triggers
Once you’re past that first 48 to 72-hour window, you’ve got more freedom, but your week-one choices still matter. This is when people often “test” their curls with new products, a tight ponytail, or extra brushing. That’s usually when the shape starts to loosen early.
Edmonton reality check: pools, patios, and indoor heat
Summer in Edmonton can mean pool days and festivals. Chlorine, sweat, and sun can rough up the cuticle fast. Winter is the opposite problem. Indoor heating plus cold air can dry your ends out in a hurry. In both seasons, your best move is to protect moisture without smothering your curls.
If you’re doing a sweaty workout: we generally recommend waiting at least 24 hours before a heavy sweat session. If you do sweat, let your scalp dry, then refresh lightly instead of scrubbing your roots right away.
Product rules that make Curl Experience aftercare easier (and what to skip)
Stick with what we recommended for you. We chose those products based on how your hair handled the Curl Experience in the chair, not a one-size list. In general, the goal is a water-based leave-in plus a light gel or cream that supports your curl pattern without leaving your hair greasy.
What to avoid right after your appointment
- Sulfate-heavy shampoos in the first few washes. They can strip too aggressively if your hair is on the dry side.
- Alcohol-heavy sprays that make hair feel dry or stiff in a crunchy way.
- Heavy oils and butters right away. They tend to flatten the root and make refresh days harder.

Next-day curls: the refresh routine we teach during Curl Experience
The day after your appointment, your curls might look a bit compressed from sleep. That’s normal. Don’t brush them out. Refresh is about adding a little water and a little support, then leaving your curl clumps alone.
- Mist lightly with water, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. Avoid soaking your roots.
- Use a small amount of your leave-in or styler per the steps we wrote for you. Smooth over the outside of curl clumps with flat palms.
- If a section is wonky, finger-rake only that piece, then gently scrunch to encourage the pattern.
- Diffuse on low if you need speed, or let it air dry. Hands off while drying.
Small Edmonton tip: if you’re refreshing during a dry winter week, add a touch more water and less product. Indoor heat can make product feel sticky faster.
If something feels “off, ” reach out to our team early
A little crunch at first is usually just the cast doing its job. Frizz right away often comes from touching while it’s drying, sleeping without satin, or going too heavy with oil. If you’re not sure what you’re seeing, let us know. A quick check-in can save you a week of frustration.
