Scalp Spa aftercare: 48‑Hour Do’s and Don’ts for Best Results

After your Scalp Spa, the single biggest rule is simple: give your scalp 24 to 48 hours before you wash, heat-style, or scrub. We just spent 90 to 120 minutes scoping your scalp, choosing the right option (Rejuvenating, Restorative, Renewing, or Calming), then finishing with styling and drying. In Edmonton, that “wait window” matters even more because summer sweat and winter dryness can both irritate a freshly treated scalp if you jump right back into your usual routine.
Your first 24 to 48 hours: no-wash, low-heat, hands-off
Think of the first two days as “let it settle.” Your scalp is fresh, your follicles are clear, and we want the benefits of your Scalp Spa to stick around instead of getting washed out or irritated.
48‑hour quick list: Skip washing, skip strong heat, avoid tight hats and aggressive rubbing. Keep hands out of your scalp, even if you feel a little “extra aware” of it.
Do this instead
- If you need to tidy up your hair, stick to gentle finger-fluffing and light brushing that doesn’t drag across the scalp.
- Sleep with your hair loosely secured if you need it out of your face. Loose is the key. We’re avoiding tension.
- If your scalp feels a bit sensitive, keep the temperature lukewarm in the shower and don’t aim high-pressure water directly at your scalp.
Avoid these common “oops” moments
- Sweaty workouts for 48 to 72 hours. Sweat and heat can trigger irritation and shorten your results.
- Saunas and steam rooms for 48 to 72 hours. It’s just too much heat too soon.
- Swimming and hot tubs for 48 to 72 hours. Chlorine and hot water are rough on a fresh scalp.
Days 3 to 7: keep the scalp calm, even in Edmonton weather swings
Once you’re past the first 48 hours, you can ease back in, but the first week is still about protecting your scalp barrier. In Edmonton’s summer heat, sun and sweat can sneak up fast. In winter, dryness and indoor heat can make your scalp feel tight or itchy.
Keep it gentle: wash with a sulfate-free shampoo, use warm (not hot) water, and massage lightly with the pads of your fingers. No nails. No vigorous scrubbing like you’re trying to remove paint.
Hold off on heavy oils for a full week. They can sit on the scalp, trap buildup, and undo the “clean slate” we worked for, especially if you chose our Renewing option for buildup or oil imbalance.
Scalp serum aftercare: what to use (and what to skip)
You don’t need a 10-step routine after Scalp Spa. You need the right basics, used consistently. Our team will point you toward a gentle scalp serum and a sulfate-free shampoo that matches what we saw when we scoped your scalp.
Our simple at-home routine
- Use your scalp serum exactly as directed. More isn’t better. Too much product can feel greasy and attract buildup.
- Stick to sulfate-free cleansing, especially if you’re prone to dryness or sensitivity.
- Skip gritty scalp scrubs and strong “detox” shampoos for at least a week. Your scalp doesn’t need to be stripped right after we treated it.
If you’re a commuter or you’re juggling kids and sports, keep your routine realistic. Consistency beats intensity every time.
Colour, perms, and chemical services: wait at least 72 hours
If you’ve got hair colour, a relaxer, or a perm on your calendar, give your scalp time. We recommend waiting at least 72 hours after your Scalp Spa before any chemical service. That buffer helps reduce irritation and keeps your scalp from feeling “raw” after multiple processes close together.
If timing is tight, let us know. We’ll talk through a plan so you’re not guessing.
Local note: If you’re near Southgate, it’s easy to swing by for a quick product pickup or a scalp check. We’re right in the Pleasantview / Southgate area, with simple access from the Southgate LRT and nearby shopping.
If something feels “off, ” reach out. We’ll help you troubleshoot fast.
A little tenderness can be normal, especially if your scalp was stressed, dry, or tense going in. What we don’t want is escalating irritation.
- Reach out if you have persistent burning, worsening redness, or flaking that feels intense and new.
- Reach out if you accidentally washed right away, worked out hard, or went in a pool, and now your scalp feels reactive. We’ll tell you what to do next.
